Separation & Divorce - Kids

Many children go through divorce with relatively few problems or permanent effects. For some children, the effects of divorce can be traumatic and long-lived. Counseling can help and that’s why we are offering age-specific groups on an ongoing basis.

Changes in a child’s living arrangements, time with parents, or ongoing parental conflict are difficult for children. Twenty to twenty-five percent of the children whose parents divorce suffer significant adjustment problems as teenagers. The negative impact can persist into adulthood, resulting in nearly twice the normal prevalence of mental health problems and impaired educational attainment. Counseling provides a safe space for exploring feelings to help children adjust and process this difficult transition, often with very positive results.

If you would like to help your child navigate the difficult emotions associated with separation or divorce, the Counseling Center may be able to help. To request a confidential session or to join a support group, call us at 781.631.8273. Counseling for couples and individuals is also available.

Group for Children of Separated or Divorced Parents

Ages 6-8
6-week sessions
New sessions starting soon!

Children whose parents are going through a separation or divorce need to know that they are not alone. The group allows a small group of children of similar ages to meet weekly and receive support and advice for dealing with their parent’s separation or divorce.

This group is led by a trained therapist who will help the children express and understand their feelings about their parent’s situation. The children learn coping skills and move forward towards accepting the divorce/separation.

Goals of the Group

  • Help children express and understand their feelings about their parent’s separation/divorce, and know that they are not alone
  • Help children understand that the divorce/separation is not their fault
  • Teach coping skills and share ways to cope
  • Help children move forward towards acceptance of the divorce/separation

Methodology

  • Activities
  • Circle Sharing
  • Role Play

Cost

Price for each group session is $40. If you have health insurance, these group sessions may be billable to your insurance carrier. Co-payments will be due at each session. A sliding-scale fee is available if requested for income-eligible participants.
